Last week ago

Alex in Princes Street Gardens“Last week ago” is my favourite Alex-ism right now. (There are so many good ones, like “have to try and avoid that,” and “we’re alllll cats.”) But this one combines his growing sense of time with a subtly mutated idiom in an unutterably cute three-word package.

“So, Alex, when did you stay overnight at Grandma and Granda’s house?”

“Last week ago I did that.”

Scary place

Alex has a jigsaw puzzle that is a map of Europe. Being designed for three-year-olds, it includes cute, stereotypical cartoons for each country. Scotland has a kilted bagpiper, Spain has a flamenco dancer, and Romania has a…vampire.

Romania is a scary place

As we were putting it together this evening, Alex explained to me:

“That’s a scary place. It’s got ouchy things that could make you dead.”

I’m sure the Romanian Tourist Office will be pleased that this message is getting across to toddlers.

Alex in a kilt

We got Alex measured up for a kilt today. My cousin Cameron is getting married at the end of September, and of course all the Sutherland men have to be dressed appropriately for the event.
