Google desktop search

Google has finally decided to hit the desktop. We all know it’s going to be good. The question is now, do I want Google to know what’s on my hard disk?

I’m getting the same kind of itchy feeling I had with A9. I wonder if it’ll go away. I’m happy enough with the way Lookout lets me search my mail and documents quickly. How much better is Google’s search, and how much privacy do I have to give up to get it?

The tool has only just been released; it’s going to be a few weeks before the dust settles.

  1. “do I want Google to know what’s on my hard disk?”

Easy. Takes one nanosecond to answer. No.

  2. Now that is why I read your blog Martin – Lookpout – what a genius program. Having spent about 10 mins a couple of weeks ago chasing an email from a hotel we were going to stay at, I found it – only to discover that it contained all the terms I was searching for, but that Outlook couldn’t find it. I was looking for something just like this.

    Cheers

  3. Lookout rocks. It really does many you realise how awful Microsoft’s own search facilities are.

I think I will give the Google desktop search thing a try to see what it’s like…but only in a Virtual Machine for now.
