Really nice, feel good film. (Dexter Fletcher directing again &#8211; I loved <i>Sunshine on Leith<\/i>, too)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/a_walk_among_the_tombstones\"><i>A Walk Among The Tombstones<\/i><\/a>: I hadn&#8217;t realized that this was a Matt Scudder film, based on Lawrence Block&#8217;s books (which I like). Pretty good downbeat private eye film.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/miss_peregrines_home_for_peculiar_children\"><i>Miss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children<\/i><\/a>: Meh. Atmospheric, but lacklustre performances from everyone involved. It felt very long.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_secret_life_of_pets\"><i>The Secret Life of Pets<\/i><\/a>: The trailer has all the good bits.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/room_2015\"><i>Room<\/i><\/a>: AMAZING<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/doctor_strange_2016\"><i>Dr. Strange<\/i><\/a>: It was fine, I suppose. It&#8217;s a door into the magical aspects of the Marvel universe, but I&#8217;ve never been very interested in that part. Narratively and thematically, the film offers nothing new. Visually, Christopher Nolan did all of this in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/inception\"><i>Inception<\/i><\/a> already.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Books &#038; comics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Signal_and_the_Noise\"><i>The Signal and the Noise<\/i> by Nate Silver<\/a>: Very readable account of forecasting and predictions, and the statistics involved. I feel like I should spend more time getting to grips with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xkcd.com\/1132\/\">Bayesian statistics<\/a>, because my maths and science background was 95% frequentist.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/comics\/collection\/57095\/scarlet_witch_vol_1_witches_road_trade_paperback\"><i>Scarlet Witch vol1: Witches&#8217; Road<\/i><\/a> by James Robinson et al. Didn&#8217;t really like this. See notes on <i>Dr. Strange<\/i> above.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vertigocomics.com\/comics\/the-sheriff-of-babylon-2015\/the-sheriff-of-babylon-1\"><i>The Sheriff of Babylon vol 1<\/i><\/a> by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. Was chatting to the staff at Forbidden Planet in Glasgow, and they recommended this to me because I liked the new Vision story (also written by Tom King). <i>The Sheriff of Babylon<\/i> is a military detective story set in post-war Baghdad. Very intense, very good.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/comics\/collection\/58290\/mockingbird_vol_1_i_can_explain_trade_paperback\"><i>Mockingbird vol 1 &#8211; I Can Explain<\/i><\/a> by Chelsea Cain, Kate Niemczyk et al.: Great. Thrilling and funny non-linear narrative around another great female Marvel hero. She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, Silk, Hellcat, Mockingbird &#8211; Marvel has a <em>ton<\/em> of fabulous books on the go right now with women heroes. I hope the cinematic universe catches up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/comics\/collection\/58290\/mockingbird_vol_1_i_can_explain_trade_paperback\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sunpig.com\/martin\/images\/2016\/mockingbird.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"962\" alt=\"Did you eat my quinoa, Stark? Because I will hurt you.\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago I watched season 6 of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Walking_Dead_(TV_series)\"><i>The Walking Dead<\/i><\/a> to cheer myself up. It&#8217;s been that kind of month. And that was <em>before<\/em> the US election. Also season 1 of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agent_Carter_(TV_series)\"><i>Agent Carter<\/i><\/a>. I wanted to like it more than I actually did.<\/p>\n<p>Music:<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned in a couple of earlier posts that I&#8217;ve been listening to quite a bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/sunpig.com\/martin\/2016\/11\/13\/the-lumineers-at-heineken-music-hall-monday-7-november-2016\/\">The Lumineers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sunpig.com\/martin\/2016\/11\/13\/65daysofstatic-at-q-factory-friday-11-november-2016\/\">65daysofstatic<\/a>. The new album by The Naked And Famous, <a href=\"https:\/\/tnaf.lnk.to\/SimpleForms\"><i>Simple Forms<\/i><\/a> has also been in heavy rotation. I&#8217;ve got a ticket to see them in Utrecht next year. ?? Deacon Blue&#8217;s new disc, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deaconblue.com\/about\/291-believers\"><i>Believers<\/i><\/a> hasn&#8217;t caught fire for me yet.
