Since we declared the road betwen us closed
\nAnd let the gates be covered by the vine
\nThat grows between the trees, and seems to twine
\nAround the very sunbeams, I supposed
\nYou went on very well without me here.
\nI’d come through once before, and found the place
\nSo little changed, the well-remembered space
\nAs painful as before, and still as dear.
\nToday, the vines are withered in the frost,
\nThe wall-stones slick and chilly on my hands
\nAs, pausing at the top, I see it stands
\nUnchanged outside, but all its comfort lost.
\nAnd then I slide back down, for now I know
\nThe road remains, but there’s nowhere to go.<\/p>\n
