Far over the cracking pavement grass’d
\nTo supermarket car park glass’d
\nI must away ere it’s midday
\nTo seek some plums to break my fast.<\/em><\/p>\n

The other day I bought some fruit
\nNot yet quite ripe, but soon to suit
\nMy morning taste. And, bag-encased,
\nThose plums were mine beyond dispute.<\/p>\n

I bought red apples to give to Bill
\nSo he’d have fruit to eat his fill.
\nHe loves what’s sweet, and dares to eat
\nThe food I leave in the fridge to chill.<\/p>\n

We’ve had this argument before
\nSince he will oft my signs ignore.
\nI write “Keep out, you dirty lout.”
\nAnd “Eat this food and you’ll get what for!”<\/p>\n

And so I hid those plums from him
\nBehind the milk, in a corner dim,
\nI’d planned and schemed, and so I dreamed
\nOf cold sweet plums on the way to gym.<\/p>\n

Far over the cracking pavement grass’d
\nTo supermarket car park glass’d
\nI must away ere it’s midday
\nTo seek some plums to break my fast.<\/em><\/p>\n

The sun was hidden by the gloom
\nAnd woke me not. In our bedroom
\nI slept past eight, while Bill, up late,
\nHad got the munchies, I presume.<\/p>\n

The wooden floor in the kitchen squeaked
\nThe icebox door with menace creaked
\nAnd in their sack, open to attack,
\nSat plums with condensation streaked.<\/p>\n

The bag it rustled, then it tore
\nThat pig ate one, and wanted more.
\nThe plums were gone, that I’d counted on:
\nMy breakfast plans did my Bill ignore.<\/p>\n

And on arising, what did I see
\nBut the note that Bill left me
\nIn timeless verse (which makes it worse):
\nA self-indulgent fauxpology.<\/p>\n

Far over the cracking pavement grass’d
\nTo supermarket car park glass’d
\nI must away ere it’s midday
\nTo seek some plums to break my fast.<\/em><\/p>\n
