The first frost, whitening the grass today,
\nSurprised the summer’s final cloverheads
\nAnd scattered them with diamonds as they lay
\nLike amethysts beside the cattail beds.
\nThe mist moves like the Lord upon the face
\nOf silver waters ruffled by the wake
\nThat trails an onyx grebe. The pearly lace
\nOf clouds drops sunbeams on the waiting lake.
\nBut still the rows of indecisive trees
\nStand dithering between the green and gold,
\nAs if they’ve months to go before the freeze.
\nSo, muddy-leafed, they watch the fall unfold
\nAnd wear this day the way that little girls
\nPlay dress-up in their mother’s finest pearls.<\/p>\n
