{"id":2627,"date":"2007-08-21T00:00:33","date_gmt":"2007-08-20T22:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sunpig.com\/abi\/?p=2627"},"modified":"2014-01-19T22:42:27","modified_gmt":"2014-01-19T21:42:27","slug":"pooh-meets-tolkien-meets-cthulhu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunpig.com\/abi\/2007\/08\/21\/pooh-meets-tolkien-meets-cthulhu\/","title":{"rendered":"Pooh meets Tolkien meets Cthulhu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deep in the Hundred Acre Wood<br \/>Where all that happens is for good,<br \/>Where Roo still plays on sunny days.<br \/>Pooh and friends once desperate stood.<\/p>\n<p>The Bear of Little Brain then dwelled<br \/>Where honey with a U is spelled<br \/>Among the trees and bumble bees<br \/>And hero parties oft were held.<\/p>\n<p>With Piglet trembling close beside<br \/>He roamed the forest, far and wide,<br \/>Where Heffalumps and Tigger jumps<br \/>Would make our heroes run and hide.<\/p>\n<p>While in the background Rabbit fussed<br \/>And griped and (sotto voce) cussed<br \/>As Pooh was stuck and then unstuck<br \/>Uncured of his great hunny-lust.<\/p>\n<p>The haycorns grew in sunlit dells<br \/>While daffodils and silver bells<br \/>On riverside did thick abide<br \/>And perfumed with ambrosial smells.<\/p>\n<p>But deep within the river crept<br \/>A darker force, its anger kept<br \/>In check by him who, visage grim,<br \/>His watch maintained while others slept.<\/p>\n<p>Until a game of Pooh-sticks played<br \/>Upon a new bridge in the shade.<br \/>When Eeyore won, his guard undone<br \/>Released the thing from where it stayed.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud that crossed the sun that noon<br \/>Was not a bear on a balloon.<br \/>The darkness spread, and with it, dread<br \/>That reckoning was coming soon.<\/p>\n<p>The grass grew withered, turning grey.<br \/>The river whipped up icy spray<br \/>And in the trees the honey bees<br \/>Mysteriously slipped away.<\/p>\n<p>As ruin of their home they faced<br \/>Our heroes in their centre placed<br \/>Small frightened Roo, and Piglet too<br \/>While breath grew short and pulses raced.<\/p>\n<p>And at the shore they made their stand<br \/>Between the water and the land<br \/>As eye met eye they knew they&#8217;d die<br \/>And with their blood stain red the sand.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the bridge brave Rabbit hopped<br \/>The shadows rose and overtopped<br \/>The parapet.&nbsp; Old Long-ears met<br \/>And stopped the dark, then lifeless dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then for his dead friend Tigger howled<br \/>And in response, the forest growled<br \/>Thence came a beast, like Death released<br \/>And Rabbit&#8217;s lifeless corpse befouled.<\/p>\n<p>The tiger <i>bounced<\/i> then, gold and red<br \/>And from him darkness briefly fled<br \/>But the black struck swiftly back<br \/>And left him broken, beaten, dead.<\/p>\n<p>Above the heroes rose a bird<br \/>By Tigger&#8217;s death to courage spurred.<br \/>No longer meek, with claw and beak<br \/>Old Owl fought (without a word!)<\/p>\n<p>Then Christopher Robin turned<br \/>And saw the river once more churned<br \/>With foul mud and Rabbit&#8217;s blood<br \/>As revenant, their friend returned.<\/p>\n<p>At that their blood froze in their veins.<br \/>Abandoning their meagre gains<br \/>They huddled in, while with a grin<br \/>The zombie rodent sought their brains.<\/p>\n<p>And as they stood in trembling row<br \/>And watched the beast they used to know<br \/>He reached right through and seized on Roo.<br \/>And though they fought he&#8217;d not let go.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled his tiny captive through<br \/>Their hopeless clutches and withdrew<br \/>His prey, held tight, soon ceased to fight<br \/>And then, &#8220;Oh, <i>bother<\/i>!&#8221; exclaimed Pooh.<\/p>\n<p>And at that sound the noises ceased<br \/>As friend and foe and eldrich beast<br \/>Turned in awe, and wond&#8217;ring, saw<br \/>The Might of Pooh at last released.<\/p>\n<p>A gentle humming sound he made<br \/>And through the grass began to wade<br \/>And all he touched unclenched, unclutched<br \/>As he spread peace throughout the glade.<\/p>\n<p>With Kanga weeping in his wake<br \/>His way to Rabbit did he make.<br \/>The foul hare, with yellow stare<br \/>In unclean voice then harshly spake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You rob me of my prey, then, Pooh?<br \/>Three friends for one I&#8217;ll trade to you<br \/>If I can choose the one you lose<br \/>I&#8217;ll end it now, bear.&nbsp; What say you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rabbit&#8217;s eyes then opened wide<br \/>And met with Eeyore by Pooh&#8217;s side.<br \/>His voice was grim.&nbsp; &#8220;I choose <i>him<\/i><br \/>And will not lightly be denied.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pooh turned and peered then at his friend<br \/>&#8220;I want this Unpleasantness to End<br \/>But what to do?&nbsp; I can&#8217;t lose you.&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;It&#8217;s OK,&#8221; said Eeyore.&nbsp; &#8220;I&#8217;ll mend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, not from this,&#8221; the monster smiled<br \/>And Eeyore&#8217;s fur with slime defiled.<br \/>As Rabbit healed there stood revealed<br \/>A tangled shadow, dark and wild.<\/p>\n<p>It caught up Eeyore in its night<br \/>And he succumbed without a fight<br \/>While at his side his friends all cried<br \/>And darkness howled in grim delight.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the sunlight played small Roo<br \/>While from the beach bounced Tigger too.<br \/>And Rabbit, dazed, in horror gazed<br \/>At hands still smeared with foul goo.<\/p>\n<p>The donkey lay upon the hill<br \/>While darkness worked its foul will.<br \/>The friends he saved watched him, enslaved<br \/>And vigil kept as he lay still.<\/p>\n<p>First he grew sqamous, then rugose<br \/>His skin drew tight and wrapped him close<br \/>Instead of hair grew tendrils bare<br \/>In writhing, twisting, twining rows.<\/p>\n<p>But then he moved, and raised his head.<br \/>&#8220;I see that I&#8217;m not really dead.<br \/>I should have guessed I&#8217;d get no rest.<br \/>How typical,&#8221; the donkey said.<\/p>\n<p>In time the rot seemed to reverse.<br \/>And Eeyore lived despite the curse.<br \/>&#8220;These psuedopods and Elder Gods<br \/>Are not so bad.&nbsp; It could be worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deep in the Hundred Acre WoodWhere all that happens is for good,Where Roo still plays on sunny days.Pooh and friends once desperate stood.
