I found two of the three madrones (<a href=\"http:\/\/193.62.154.38\/cgi-bin\/nph-readbtree.pl\/names\/maxvals=10\/firstval=1?ETI=Arbutus+menziesii\"><em>Arbutus menziesii<\/em><\/a>) on the first day of searching.  The hunt did take me into a bed that I hadn&#8217;t wandered through before, but actually, one of the madrones is visible from the road outside the gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the proof:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/evilrooster\/95693147\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/37\/95693147_fe775ee900.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"DSC00188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Taken 13 December 2005<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons I like madrone so much is its papery bark.  On the younger branches, it peels off in entire sheets, exposing the green underbark.  On older wood, it alligators like a charred log, which is much less dramatic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/evilrooster\/95703594\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/37\/95703594_130b806b03.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Dsc00189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Taken 13 December 2005<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The thirteenth was an overcast day, which made it difficult to take photos in natural light (I don&#8217;t use the camera&#8217;s light).
